Porcelain is an examination of a young man's crime of passion. Triply scorned -- as an Asian, a gay man and now a murderer -- 19-year-old John Lee has confessed to shooting his lover in a public lavatory in London. Winner of the London Fringe Award for Best Play, Porcelain dissects the crime through a prism of conflicting voices: newscasts, flashbacks and John's own recollections to a prison psychiatrist.

Smarty written, beautifully staged, brilliantly acted by the entire ensemble--both as individual characters and in concert with each other. Intense, intimate, jarring, passionate, incredibly realistic, emotionally involving. Very well-done! Highly recommended...
After disappointing last production (Sissystrata), Celebration Theatre is back to its outstanding form. Porcelain compares well to some of its best shows in recent years (Stupid Kids, Bacchae, Play It Cool).

As Equus roars back onto Broadway, CT amps up for what could be called its gay counterpart: Porcelain. First produced in the early 90s, this play catapulted the author to fame for its in-your-face portrayal of a young man who explodes when fiery sexual desire ignites a powder keg of social and self-alienation. Here, the piece is polished and held in the bright light of 2008 making it seem fresh again. Of course, it shouldn't be fresh at all. Following years of sexual proclamation and racial healing, it ought to be a museum piece. But it ain't. And after the titillating production is over, it's the irony of its on-going relevance that stays with you. Well cast, well directed and eerily shrouded by the Psycho shower curtain, this show marks a great start to the new season. (P.S. The "off the record" comment by the therapist, delivered in unselfconscious brashness, is a jarringly false note. Get past it. All else is finely realized.)

This is an exceptionally superb production of a challenging and provocative play. It's the best production mounted by Celebration Theater in years and a no miss night at the theater. GO!

Provocative subject aside, the writer gets to the essence of what it is to feel completely alone even when with people. Lead character John Lee is alone even when engaged in sex. He's alone when with family. All his strivings to connect lead to nothing. A gentle, highly intelligent man becomes unhinged.

The actor who plays the murderer's father, makes us feel the intensity of a father's love for his son even as he rejects him.

The cast excellently portrays the many self-serving professionals, anxious to pad their careers through this tragic event.
