This brilliant band was exceptionally adept in so many styles, reggae, high life, melding a variety of African rhythms & toasting. If their plight has baptized their fury & melody all I saw was musical joy & a very tight section. I've seen Bob & the Wailers in '75, Eliades Ochoa, Gregory Issacs, Muddy Waters, & all manner of bands at the Roxy. This was rocking hard, I was stunned & happy to be there.Written on May 13 2010

Amongst an eclectic bohemian, multicultural crowd, we jammed to this most excellent band!!! Their rythms swayed from one spectrum of mainland Africa through the Atlantic Ocean to Caribbean beats. It was incredibly touching to see their fervor to survive in such dire circumstances and turn their possible gloom into a glowing fire of music.Written on May 13 2010

Description
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars celebrate the release of their new album Rise & Shine. DJ Jeremy Sole will support. Formed in West African refugee camps, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars have risen like a phoenix from the ashes of destruction to create this infectious and celebratory new record. Produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Angélique Kidjo, Michelle Shocked, Rickie Lee Jones and Ozomatli), Rise & Shine was recorded in Freetown, Sierra Leone and New Orleans, Louisiana. Much like the band, the residents of New Orleans know both the bitterness of exile and the redemptive power of music, and the spirit of the Crescent City permeates this uplifting album.
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are a group of musicians who escaped the horrific violence of Sierra Leone's civil war, landed in a West African refugee camp and formed a band to keep their spirits up and their hopes alive. From these humble beginnings the band has now grown to be an international musical sensation. Their ‘can't help but dance’ live shows and their musical message have earned them devoted fans around the world. They've known the horrors of war firsthand and have become ambassadors of peace. An unbelievable testament to the human spirit, the journey of Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars exemplifies the universal healing power of music.
