Celebration Theatre presents Allain Rochel's Sissystrata. Based on Aristophanes' classic Greek satire Lysistrata, the play is set in West Hollywood's gay community in the year 2013. When all the 'tops' decide to join the military, the 'bottoms' come up with a risque plan to bring an end to war.

This was a gleeful night out - totally camp, but laced with a compassionate intelligence. Greek comedies were riotous, giddy and quite nutty affairs, frequently 'examining' the effects of powerlessness in the face of the gods, and gender issues. This production, joyfully written by Allain Rochel, goes head on into those issues, focusing on gay marriage, masculinity and the military, and has far more hits than misses. It's frothy, camp and ultimately endearing - and the cast throw themselves mercilessly at it with full gay abandon.

Great idea: take Aristophanes' Lysistrata, update it and paint it lavender. But in order to really fly, this production needed to be more fabulous. Times have changed and you can't hold an audience by simply repeating over and over that war sucks and the feminine (in whomever) is strong and worthy . . . even if you do it in a colorful, campy way. Modern audiences get their fill pretty quickly and expect more. And that's the point at which CT needed to turn up the spectacle and tone down the lecture. As Aznavour taught us years ago, a great theatrical song (What Makes a Man a Man) can carry more weight than an hour of preachiness. Less jabbering and more musical numbers would have taken this to the next level. Even Aristophanes himself said, “Why, I'd like nothing better than to achieve some bold adventure, worthy of the trip.”

It was a great night out. I scored free tickets from GoldStar.com. We had such a great time. The show was funny, colorful, and witty. I'm so glad that we went out to see it. The Celebration Theater is great too. It's very intimate and the staff were very friendly.

Description

Five years in the future, West Hollywood is a very different place. As the war in Iraq drags into its tenth year, a surprising fad, more popular than French Bulldogs and chocolate martinis, has sprung up in the gay community. In an effort to assert their masculinity, all the manly tops have enlisted in the army! To finally bring an end to the war, Seymour "Sissy" Strata organizes a sex strike among the bottom boys left behind.

A raucous new all-male adaptation of Aristophanes' comedy, Lysistrata, created by the same team that brought you last season's smash all-male adaptation of The Bacchae, Sissystrata takes aim at war and the politics of gender in the gay community.
