This comedy by Odalys Nin is the amazing true story of Catalina de Erauso. Born in 17th-century Spain, Catalina threw off her nun's veil at age 14 and decided to dress as a man. Against the odds, this bold young girl defied her society's gender roles, yet remained committed to its service as a participant in the conquest of the Americas.

I was really disappointed with this play. I have attended several plays at the Macha theatre by this same writer and this one was not even worth going. I was so bummed out cause I had been looking forward to going for months. I thought it would be good since its based on a true story... but it was terrible.

The show started late and had a 20 min. intermission after a 1/2 hour into the performance. It was only about an hour and 10 mins including the intermission. They should have just gone straight thru the show. I thought it could have been longer with a better story. And the ending just feels like there should be more after it. I was sitting there and it went dark and I was thinking this is over already? Ok....

I kept hoping it would get better but it didnt.

Save your money and see another play from goldstar.

Description

This world premiere comedy/drama is based on the memoirs of Catalina de Erauso, a 17th-century woman who lived her life as a nobleman and participated in the conquest of the Americas. Catalina was both a lover and a nun, a soldier and a pirate, a Don Quixote and a gambler, a woman and a man. She's like a Shakespearean character--bawdy, funny and audaciously entertaining. Catalina finally confessed to a priest the truth of her identity and was awarded a pension from the King of Spain as compensation for her bravery and loyalty to the Spanish crown. She was blessed by the Pope in Rome and given permission to continue dressing as a man. Catalina became one of the most famous heroes of her time and a folkloric legend for all time.
