"You know the old saw 'She could sing the phone book'? Arrica Rose has one of those voices. I don't know how old Ms. Rose is, but her molasses-sweet, slightly rasping croon certainly has more than twenty-odd years of pain in it...Now Arrica Rose has become the Arrica Rose Band, and with musicians this good, it can only be an improvement." --Sarah Zachrich, Splendid Magazine
Arrica Rose was born in Los Angeles, California where she and her band are currently based. At 16 Arrica played guitar and sang in her first band UXBY -- a punk-rock trio that stayed together for close to three years. Arrica also sang and played keyboards for THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT before attending USC film school where she spent time studying photography and sound.
The first album Arrica released was recorded on her bedroom floor. It's a self-titled acoustic EP that combined elements of folk, blues and rock n' roll. The days Arrica spent in a punk-rock band influenced her approach to music as did the wide variety of her favorite artists: Billie Holiday, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Elliott Smith, P.J. Harvey.
Arrica's next project was recorded in her closet (a walk-in) and inspired by a miniature Casio keyboard, a drum sampler, and a megaphone. THE TONE BANK is a three-song EP currently available on pOprOck records.
Most recently, Arrica finished engineering and producing her third album, AUTO-PILOT. Best described as mellow melodic indie-rock, this five-song EP is a full band recording complete with electric & acoustic guitars, bass, drums, lap steel, organ, and piano. AUTO-PILOT is also available on pOprOck records.
Arrica and band (James O'Brien- bass, Jason Mezilis- lead guitar, Ryan Brown- drums) appear most regularly at venues such as The Hotel Cafe and The Knitting Factory in Los Angeles and CBGBs in New York City. They are a must see/must hear for those in need of something new. Their music is at once unique and familiar, traditional and contemporary -- a perfect balance of beauty, energy and restraint.
