Giving a full five stars for the Gay Mafia and also the female comedienne who came on last. (The Mafia performed for about an hour of improv, and then a couple of stand-up performed after intermission.) Unfortunately, the male stand-up in between the Mafia and the female (sorry, I can't remember their names) just wasn't funny. He was immensely likable but just not funny. It could have been an off night for the poor guy. Anyhow, would be a five star review without his 20 minutes.

I think the price was too high for the act.
I had a few laughs.
The best was comedian Dana Goldberg at the end.

What a disappointment! This is perhaps the weakest improv show I have ever seen (and I've attended well over 100+). It was that unimpressive. I'm not kidding. Where do I begin?

Let's see...the actors were trying so hard to be funny that their overstrenuous attempts at humor nearly all fell flat. And more often than not you could see the wheels turning in their mind as they attempted to conjure up funny bits--that is an excruciating misstep in improv. Nothing seemed natural--it was incredibly forced.

The worst thing, however, was the totally amateurish way the scenes were edited. Almost every scene went on too long. And within the context of any given scene, a non-participating cast member would simply start clapping to signal the end of the scene. It was awkward and lame.

There also didn't seem to be any organizing principle to the show. It just went on and on with no apparent structure.

This group has appeared on Logo and I was just shocked at how amateurish their set was. Also, the evening was promoted as a night of improv and sketch comedy. There were no true sketches--it was all improv. It would have been interesting to see if their attempts at sketch were more capably executed than their improv.

The saving grace of the evening was the after intermission segment, which was a stand-up routine by Dana Goldberg. I was not familiar with her, but she was funny as hell. Solid material and great timing. And she worked beautifully with the audience, incorporating many spontaneous bits that were specific to the crowd. She was certainly funnier and had greater improvisational skills than anyone in the Gay Mafia! I will definitely continue to follow her work.

Lastly, the theater was FREEZING! They literally had one tiny space heater downstage right--and that was it. If people paid full price for this--$25.00--they should not have to freeze their butts off. But even at Goldstar's 1/2 price rate, the $16.50 price (including service charge) was too much for this unimpressive evening.

Pretty good overall. Love this theatre, and the easy/free parking at the Macha Theatre make it an easy night out.
