I do not normally give 4 stars unless the production is absolutely perfect, but I am going to change my criteria a bit for this one. First, the work itself is wonderful. You never know what you are going to get when seeing a musical premiere, but the composer/lyricist hits all the right notes in this clever, poignant interlocking story of black women in a big city housing complex. Second, the perfomances are outstanding, with believable characterizations and diva-moment songs and energetic choreography. For my taste, the offstage band was a bit tinny, and never seemed to groove, though through the awful sound system it was hard to tell. However this new musical is SO good that four stars it must have. It should move out of the cramped quarters of the gay ghetto and into one of the larger venues in town. It belongs at the Geffen or maybe to reopen the shuttered Pasadena Playhouse (Sheldon Epps are you listening?) Even if you can't get the Goldstar tix, don't miss this show!

This was a great musical and one I'm very pleased not to have missed. The show's a hit. I agree with most of the reviews here - the speakers were tinny; the music lacked a grittiness that I would've expected from these very talented performers, especially in the play's time and place; the talented women of Brewster Place could easily be playing in a much larger venue where their exits and entrances won't be so challenging (Tee really whacked her leg on my chair running out the last time); and I'd love to see this again. The mother-daughter scene with Kiswana and her mom was my favorite - so poignant, so beautifully sung. Mrs. Brown gets my vote for the night's KILLER voice. And as Mavis, the voice again, and best facial expressions. A real pleasure to watch them all, in pain and fighting back.

Great voices...soulful and real. These women show the true strength of what it takes to raise a family and be true to yourself. Great performance!
