How was your experience?
I attended this event with my Jamaican mother and Jamerican brother. I guess I'm a Jamaican-Brit. Anyway, my brother and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. We were all impressed with Debra's ability to truly capture the essence of the characters she portrayed. My brother and I understood that the play was a depiction of Debra's experience. But, our mother was disappointed, and felt that Debra portrayed all Jamaicans as schemers who will stop at nothing to get out of her beautiful country. She felt that her country-women were not characterized in the way that she remembers. Our mother would have preferred a more balanced representation of life in Jamaica (i.e., not all Jamaicans are desperate to escape the country).
