How was your experience?
A Surprise. I just went to this one because it was a cheap rare Monday matinee. The old web reviews from NY and here were mixed. One criticism was that the story was overly familiar, cliche (as though most stories are not). I thought if all the hyped stuff the Weekly and Times promote are so disappointing what could you expect from an event they actually criticized? A self indulgent solo artist telling her overwrought story of survival, right? Wrong. This was a very pleasurable 90 minutes. It flew by. Debra managed to do something none of the dozens of plays witnessed this year did for me ...she gets you to witness her story as she experiences. It is Jamaica some decades ago, and you are there struggling to get out, dealing with a foreign culture, living the rhythms of a different reality. She is at times funny and insightful but even when others laughed I found myself too close to the reality, too impressed with the challenges to take it too lightly. If we thought immigrating to the US is always simply hopping a border fence here is a bit of education. There may not be many more performances. Don't miss this one.
