How was your experience?
Not your average musical, in the spirit of RENT and Chorus Line - Spring Awakenings has you leaving the theater with a discussion of the subject matter presented in your face. Call it taboo, call it conservative, only a small percentage of folks will comfortably discuss the topic of sensitive mature matter. The play is very frank about the adults and the children (though portrayed in their teens) as they journey through their teenage years and parenthood, and at times graphically portrayed. As the song "The Word of Your Body" accurately states, "you're gonna be wounded." The dark nature of the play does have its comical moments which help lighten things up though we are laughing at issues that were not so funny as a teen. The play is well done and I would recommend it but know that mature subject matter means just that, not for the faint of heart. On another note, many of the show dates also offer either a discussion with the cast members or a parenting panel, I had the parenting panel. It was quite helpful and gave much insight to the reception this play may receive in conservative Orange County, and how to discuss the subject matter to teens and tweens.
