Rock of Ages is a light-hearted look at the Sunset Strip scene of the 80's steeped in the seedy underbelly of sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. The music is definitely the star, and the backing band is stellar, the leads are spirited and the dancing -- raunchy. All of this adds up to a show that is fun for the reminiscing adults, but highly inappropriate for kids. (Sex in a bathroom stall, strip club with lap dances, brandishing numbchucks as mock genitalia). This show is probably not appropriate for kids under 17. Just a heads up for parents, as I am still a little disturbed this morning after seeing some of kids in attendance. If this were a movie, it would be rated NC-17. Having said that, this a a romp through some of the great classic rock songs. The female lead was especially charasmatic and Constantine Maroulis, a former American Idol contestant, performed well. The narrator was welcome comic relief from some heavy topics like missed signals in love, shattered dreams, and the attempted corporate takeover of rock-n-roll. It dragged a little in the second act with an over-reliance on cliches, but the German corporate raider-turned-choclatier was a show-stopper in his blue, sparkly unitard. Go for a good time night out, but leave the kids with the sitter.
