How was your experience?
This is the second go round for me and Urban Death. This show is a follow-on from a show I saw around Halloween last year at the ZJUT. I described it then as shocking, horrorific, amusing or disgusting; and sometimes three out of four. I experienced during the previous show a period of sensory "calibration" as the conscious mind laid to rest its desire for explanation and continuity. This period was much less pronounced this time. Perhaps that was to be expected. I would say that much art was devoted to the production, music, drama and costumes/props however more emphasis was placed on the disgust effects than the other components making it seem to me a little less balanced and a bit sophomoric at times. As Hitchcock has shown us; the chills often come from what is intimated not explicit gore/violence. As a matter of fact I would say that the two shows themselves proved the point. For me the most chilling episodes were images in flashed to us in the crashing rainstorm, the rape scene at the bus station and the living human machine at the finale.
