How was your experience?
I had never seen a play by Chekhov and was looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I found the first act to be, perhaps, so much of its own time and place as to make it difficult to discern much universal from it. This, of course, falls much more on the playwright than on the production. However, the latter also had its problems, including an egregious blackface portrayal of the aged servant and a riot of characters unable to project anything serious underlying their inanity. Perhaps that was Chekhov's intention, and perhaps all was made good in the second act; my wife and I left after intermission.
