How was your experience?
I'd seen the original movie in its initial release in the 80s and more recently in a film festival devoted to H.P. Lovecraft -- where I could appreciate its sense of humor more. I would not have predicted that it would be brought back to life as a musical, nor that it would work so well. The songs play up the comedy and key character traits. And the broadness of musical theatre gave the actors permission to goose the characters as well. And the actors, script and direction are fully up to delivering the laughs (and moments of reality). So the entertainment is solidly there. On top of that, the crew put together gory special effects that splatter the front rows of the audience. (Ponchos are provided, but it wouldn't hurt to bring a raincoat. They promise the blood washes out.) It's icing on the cake and well worth making the effort to lay claim to a front row seat. A fun night for people who aren't squeamish.
