Thursday June 9, 2011 / 8:00pmStill Black, Still Proud: An African Tribute to James Brown
General Admission Special (Limit 2)
How was your experience?
The woman who was the featured singer, Mekhlit did not do James Brown, the Godfather justice. Her voice was very sweet, but it was lacking the screams, the grit, and the true funk of the music of that era. Pee Wee Ellis is a master, and so he should have had someone who was able to belt it out like a Tina Turner type. When the other vocalist was singing, Sing it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud, people were so lame. I was surprised that I was in Oakland? They could have featured the guest drummer from Senegal much more, to bring the music to a higher level. I am very particular when it comes to music, and so I am being honest, as a Singer, of my experience. Since I only paid $6.00, I can say that I was happy.
