How was your experience?
What a travesty of a great musical. I went with several friends who all expressed the same opinion. The dancing was very well done but there was so little of the dialog and plot. What was very annoying and very upsetting were the many, many lines spoken in Spanish. Several people near us commented that they did not understand what was being said and two people actually walked out. The Spanish that was spoken was done so rapidly that if you did not know the language you were at a loss. One of the people in our party stated they would have enjoyed the show a lot more if they had been able to understand what was being said. Yet all of the character occasionally spoke accented English in many of the lines. In an American theater I would like to hear ENGLISH spoken albeit with an accent. The show was a huge dissapointment for me and I will NOT recommend this version to anyone. Also some lines were spoken very rapidly with little enunciation and regard for the listening audience. "Anita" spoke so rapidly (and at times so loudly) that it was almost impossible to follow her. Even the set design appear to be mediocre. With a venue and stage available they could have done so much more. Having recently seen both 9 to 5 and Mary Poppins on this same stage, the contrast in design and lighting was even more marked. I usually refrain from negative reviews but I was so disappointed in this performance; maybe they will improve in the future - it was the opening night performance.
