How was your experience?
Let me state that "West Side Story" is one of my favorite musicals, so the bar was set high. I had no problem with the alterations in the show (i.e. changes to musical numbers, such as "America"), although the use of Spanish was jarring for many friends who do not speak the language. I was, however VERY disappointed with the two leads. The actor who played Tony had the most grating voice. I know I'm not alone in this opinion as everyone I have asked agreed. While Maria had a beautiful operatic voice, her speaking voice was like fingernails on a blackboard. The Puerto Rican accent was fine, but the sing-song intonation of her dialogue was annoying. The roles of Anita, Nardo and Riff truely stood out. The Jets and Sharks put on a great performance and a stand-out for me was the singing of Anybodys in "Somewhere". My favorite numbers were "America" and "Tonight (Quintet)". I took my 8-year-old and was shocked by Act II. "Gee, Officer Krupke" was peppered with a lot of lewd dance moves and gestures as was the final soda shop scene between Anita and the Jets. I'm not a prude, but it was unexpected and extremely uncomfortable with a small child beside me. There was never a warning when purchasing tickets or entering the theater. I've spoken to several people of all ages and everyone agreed it was a somewhat disappointing show. I would rate it a C.
