How was your experience?
I found some of the presentations to be interesting, but on the whole, I felt there was a lack of substance. For example, I was surprised that there wasn't any substantive discussion of theatre criticism, labor relations, or producing costs. Since these are huge obstacles to any kind of drastic change in the business of Broadway, I think they warrant more attention than they got. That said, I did enjoy the presentations from Patricia Martin, Damian Bazadona, Joseph Craig, and Greg Mosher. Something Mosher said would have been well placed at the front of the day. To paraphrase him, some theatre will not attract large audiences, and that is fine -- but it warrants a different conversation. This was a day about Broadway, which is not the same as a day about theatre. I think we should do this again and focus ourselves differently. My two cents. But bravo to the organizers for having the idea. You've gotta start somewhere.
