How was your experience?
This event takes place at Julia's, so minus a star for that. There's just something about Julia's that rubs me the wrong way--maybe it's the overpriced, yet mediocre, food? Or perhaps the snide waitstaff? My friend and I got there at 8:15, which was the earliest we could pick up tickets, according to our confirmation notice. The host/hostess was missing, so we seated ourselves. Apparently that was the wrong thing to do, as we were bitchily informed by the girl in the turquoise wig. We were actually supposed to stand in line outside, in the cold, and wait for an hour to be let in for seating. Once seating began, they hurried us along like cattle, since the drag queens apparently just could not wait! (If that were true, perhaps chair set-up could have begun on time?) The actual show was only okay. The MC, Jinkx Monsoon, has been reviewed as the best drag queen in Seattle, and I would have to agree! Beautiful, funny, and genuinely talented--she could actually sing! She was the only drag queen to really work the audience. The other drag queens were poor imitations of their chosen stars (Cher, Pink, Celine Dion, Gaga, etc), and mostly looked bored. Once in a while they would flounce down the aisle, looking for tips. The back-up dancers were completely fabulous, however, and Jinkx Monsoon redeemed the entire thing. I'm so glad that I paid half price, however--$25 for this? Ridiculous. I'm pretty sure they recycle the same show every week, so no need to return. I prefer low-budget, original character drag queens--way more attitude, way more unique.
