We loved the Washington Opera performance of Nabucco. The music is so beautiful - and the chorus is so powerful. Midgette (Post critic) didn't like the staging of a play within a play. What we saw was a group of 19th Century aristocrats watching the opera about the Jews and Assyrians, And, I thought that setting helped set Verdi's work in the context of the Italian nationalistic movement. Plus, the picture of Franz Joseph next to Nebuchanezzer in the Playbill reinforced the idea of godless tyrants (both looked imperious and were wearing kooky hats). The Hungarian soprano singing Abigaille was terrific - as was Nabucco (Italian). The setting and costumes were quite spectacular - and you can't beat those Old Testament stories for drama. The scene where Nebuchanezzer was struck down by Jehovah was grand! Ahh, if only all our enemies could be so devastatingly dispatched!
