How was your experience?
I love RENT! The musical captured my heart when I first saw it on stage in 2000. I rated this performance with only 4 stars because I was disappointed or distracted by a couple of things. One of the most meaningful things to me in my first viewing of RENT! was that the program included information about Jonathan Larson. I had told my friend that she HAD to read about Jonathan Larson in the program before the show started... there was not one developed mention of Jonathan or his story in the program beyond listing him as the writer. No Day But Today holds ultimate meaning in light of Jonathan's story, all he worked for to bring this show to the stage, and his untimely ending. I felt very disappointed that new viewers of this show in this venue would not have access to this information, and also the mentions of the post humous awards he won. I thought the vocals were good, but the emphasis on the consonants was too harsh and distracting from many of the performers - and I was way up in the Balcony. And, finally, though the characters were dressed appropriately in character for the most part, I was disappointed that they were not in the traditional RENT! costumes. This was a good show overall, and I think new viewers won't know the little things that they're missing - though I hope they don't miss the value of Jonathan's story and his legacy.
