How was your experience?
Mary Bridget Davies was phenomenal. For most of the show, you could close your eyes and think you were listening to Joplin. For those who grew up with Joplin, it's a must see just for this performance, and the memories evoked by it. That's the good. We thought the story was weak to the point of irritating. It didn't know what it was: a Joplin concert, a biography, a retrospective? The story tried to give a feel for Joplin, and completely failed. The audience was on the older side, as expected - hard to imagine my 20 year old could care less about Joplin. But the cast tried to excite the crowd as if they were 20somethings. Irritating. And it seemed clear that the non-Joplin songs were there to give Davies a break now and then. Except for one case, they were filler, not used to play into Joplin. Performace was fine in isolation, but just distracting. So there were a lot of negatives. But the Davies performance was beyond amazing and well worth seeing, which is reason for 4 stars.
