Saturday September 1, 2012 / 11:00amA Taste of Santa Monica Food Tour
How was your experience?
The first stop, Fraiche, was cancelled because of another event. We were notified of this during the tour. I was disappointed because I had tried to go there before to use a Groupon and couldn't because they were closed due to a fire in the kitchen. Planet Raw was interesting. I was able to sample things I wouldn't have eaten elsewhere, such as cheesy kelp pasta and purple "cheese"cake. Hostaria del Piccolo served us a pizza Margarita which had great crust, but I wish the toppings had been more interesting. I can eat a pizza Margarita any time, but I wondered what else they have to set them apart. They also served us fried calamari and a few fried shrimp. The calamari was slightly overcooked, and there weren't enough shrimp to go around, only 4 for 10 people, so we had to share. The last 3 places were at Santa Monica Place. We spent too much time at the first two places because we had to rush when we were at the mall. We sampled Comte cheese and porchetta at Norcino salumeria. The cheese was wonderful. We got a half of a chocolate truffle and a half of a French macaron at Chocolate Opulence. Both were good, but I wish we had gotten a whole one of each. The last stop was N'ice Cream. We were able to sample the gelato and get a single scoop. They let us get two flavors. For some reason I didn't think it was as rich as other ice cream. The tour guides Chris and Annie were nice. They weren't able to answer a lot of historical questions people had about the city, which we toured prior to dining. The tour was fun because I went to places I never would have visited on my own. I would have rated it 4 stars if Fraiche had been included.
