How was your experience?
Overall, I thought this production of My Fair Lady was just wonderful! Leads Manna Nichols and Benedict Campbell were fantastic. I thought they did a really nice job of portraying the growing relationship between Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins in a way that made the ending actually make some sense, a task not easy to do with this story. With one notable exception, the acting and singing in this production were very strong. The costumes were quite creative and beautiful. And the "in the round" staging of this production creates an incredibly dynamic visual experience for the audience. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because of the actor who portrayed Alfred P. Doolittle, James Saito. He is completely miscast in this role. He doesn't have anywhere near the charisma or the voice to carry this role. He was so bad, I had to wonder if he had the flu! If he didn't have the flu, shame on the director for keeping him in this part. What a disappointment! This is a role that can steal the show! Lucky for Mr. Saito, the ensemble cast is so wonderful that they keep his signature number, "I'm Getting Married in the Morning" from falling completely flat. If you love this musical, go see this production! It is fresh and lively. It's costuming, staging, and acting choices bring new life to this classic. I hope to get to go back and see it again!
