How was your experience?
I have never been to a ballet and I had my reservations about going to one, but I figured it was the Nutcracker and I should probably see it, right? I am now very aware that I am not a ballet person. So I can't offer any critique on the performance.... I have no idea if this was a good or bad show. Ultimately, I was bored with the exception of one dance where they had a little Michael Jackson tribute. However, I have seen a number of plays and musicals and the set design was substandard in comparison to those. The costumes were okay... That may be on purpose... maybe you're just supposed to marvel at the dancing.... but regardless, this was not an amazing visual experience. There was also no live orchestra - the whole thing was choreographed to a CD or something, so you lose an element of it being a completely live event. Again, maybe that's normal. The Wiltern was definitely not the best venue for this. I was seated in a high top chair. I'm 5'11" and my feet did not touch the floor, there was no elbow rest, and I was rubbing shoulders with the person next to me. We were crammed in there, it was way too hot, and the seats were uncomfortable. In front of us a little girl had to sit next to some overweight individuals, who definitely spilled over their space and into hers, so at least I didn't have that problem. Overall, I'm glad I saw it so I don't have to see it (or any other ballet) again. Both my girlfriend and I were ready to leave when it was done and since then we have continued to joke about it, so at least I am getting some amusement out of it now.
