How was your experience?
This is Sister Act the Musical, a loose adaptation of the movie (emphasis on loose). Unlike Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, this musical takes liberties with the location and time period. This is all fine, except the best part of the movie has been left out: the music! The songs created for the musical are all original and have nothing to do with the film. This was a huge risk and, unfortunately, the songs fail to please in the same way they did in the movie. On top of the lackluster music, there are awkward moments where the songs feel forced. Songs numbers were put in that were awkward and uninspiring. Especially awkward are virtually all of the male lead numbers. If you've never seen the movie, you may like the musical. If you go expecting the same level of entertainment as the movie, you will be disappointed. All of the singers have fantastic voices, they just have lousy songs. At times the musical seems just silly and you feel like you're watching an elementary school production (including the set). As for the venue, The Boston Opera House seems to have great seats everywhere (though I'd never want to be in the upper balcony). Seats are average in comfort and tall people will bump their knees (I'm 6 ft). Final advice: skip the musical, watch the movie again.
