How was your experience?
I went in wanting to love this production, but unfortunately, it just didn't deliver for me. One major stumbling block was the sound quality. The microphones went out several times during the first act, and the levels never seemed quite right. The orchestra sound was also very tinny; despite it being live, it sounded prerecorded. During intermission, I heard some of the tech folks discussing the problems they were having with the sound levels. I didn't attend a preview performance; things should have been worked out by then. And it just seemed really inappropriate to be discussing these problems loudly in front of the paying audience. Why not just go backstage? Other issues: a group of people was sitting near the back of the theatre with a laptop open taking notes, which was distracting. From where I was sitting, I could see stage people and actors walking around offstage between appearances. Also, I don't think the "nontraditional" staging of this musical worked well - I thought it was overproduced. The good part - all of the actors were fabulous with great voices. There were just so many issues standing in their way that I couldn't enjoy it.
