How was your experience?
Very enjoyable! This intimate theatre experience in the heart of old downtown Escondido is something I will definitely do again. Next time I'll come earlier to take advantage of the great shops and restaurants along E. Grand Ave. The cast of "An Ideal Husband" was extremely competent. The set and costumes were very well done and true to the setting of England in the1900s. Although I prefer that American actors not use a British accent, the actors added a British inflection without going overboard. The leads were good, expecially Lord Chiltern and his nemesis Mrs. Chevely. Only the second night of the run, but it seemed that the production had not yet jelled in its pacing and needs a little tightening up. A play of morals and manners, the role of women is highlighted by the playwright, but should be more important in this production. The comedic sections should be used more by the actors. Many of the funny bits are underplayed and could have been used more effectively to add some contrast to the serious themes. It was a pleasure to see such a capable community theatre production.
