How was your experience?
First, the good stuff: The music is amazing (of course), the set is brilliant, Fela is sensational, as are his musicians and dancers. The energy is just bouncing off the walls, in a good way! Then the second act comes along, and it bogs down. It's not that I don't appreciate and understand the things that happened to Fela and the Shrine; I do and the play conveys that in brutal terms...as it should. But the trip to the spirit side was just way, way too much and too long. I would have caught a nap had it not been so loud. And whoever thought it was a good idea to cast the chick from Destiny's Child was apparently some marketing whiz kid angling for a very narrow demographic. She was pathetic! The character is supposed to be a strong, radical Black Panther, but she came across as a talking Barbie doll. Without a doubt, the weakest link in an otherwise strong cast. I saw the London production a couple of years ago, and I KNOW how intense that character can be. This is not that character. All in all, it's a terrific show, just be prepared to look beyond the obvious flatliners.
