How was your experience?
This production is visually beautiful, but I believe the rewrite was insufficient to bring full life to this piece. The first half is declamatory, and the audience gets restive with all the personalities and issues that are mentioned but not demonstrated. Thankfully, the second half is more integrated as drama, and works well. The Wallenstein character is well acted and has appeal. Some of the sub-characters are wooden sticks, no matter how the good actors try to bring them to life. Obviously this is a big and expensive production, and should be supported. It is not in the top tier of experiences for the STC, however. I do applaud the attempt to move beyond the constant repetition of a few stock plays which audiences have seen and seen over the decades. Lindamarie S.
