How was your experience?
I really wanted to like it: it's a great musical, and I love supporting small theatre companies. However, the sound was really poor. If you are sitting on the right side of the theatre, you will find it hard to hear the singing over the orchestra, who are all sitting off to the side of stage left. I am very familiar with the show, but still felt like I missed a lot; it would be very difficult for anyone who didn't know the show. A lot of the blocking has singers facing the wings or even walking upstage, and they are not miked. In Act 1, I was sitting far to the right and couldn't hear anything when the singer was facing away from me. You could tell who could hear by which part of the theatre the laughter came from. In Act 2, they lowered the volume on the speakers and I moved closer to the center when several seats opened up (I'm not sure whether this is because the audience members thought the show ended after all the "happy endings" of Act 1, or maybe because they had trouble hearing), and it was better, but there were still many times that I couldn't hear. The singers all have good voices, but they will have to project more. They often seemed to forget that even though they are singing something soft and ballad-like, the audience still has to hear them. It was a preview night, so hopefully they can work it out during the course of the run.
