How was your experience?
The show was just wonderful. It was an amazing magic show and a well-acted play -- combined. The star, who plays Harry Houdini, was talented at both. The actor who plays his brother Theo was a terrific actor and also had a beautiful voice. The actress who played Bess, Houdini's wife, is adorable, which is what the role calls for. The only down side was -- why did Houdini's mother spout gibberish when she was supposed to be speaking Yiddish? Houdinii, who was Jewish, would have spoken Yiddish with his mother, and it would have been so easy in a city like Chicago to get someone to fill in the blanks with the real and wonderful language. The gibberish was just bizarre and distracting -- and not in a good way. Several of us were talking about it at intermission. Someone thought it was anti-Semitic but I don't think it was intended that way. Other than that, the show was terrific.
