How was your experience?
The changes to the life of Jesus - out with the immaculate conception, marrying Mary Magdalene to Jesus, and dispensing with the resurrection were probably intended to make the opera controversial. But what was left, Mary learning there must be a God because of her sexual passion, Peter being forced to kneel before Mary, and the ghost of Jesus sending Mary forth to tell everyone how much they loved one another, was just a trivial soap opera. And having a wordy, libretto, music without any drama, and performing the opera in a hole is the ground didn't make things any better. The one star in the otherwise foggy-gray experience was William Burden, playing the "villain" Peter, with a great voice and some stage presence.
