How was your experience?
It's hard to rate this performance because it was such a mixed experience. First of all, Jean-Yves Thibaudet is a pianist far beyond 5 stars. I have heard him perform several times and all have been performances that can bring one to tears of appreciation. Saturday evening, however, the performance stopped in the first minutes of the Saint Saens piano concerto because a key on the piano was sticking. Thibaudet stood up, Maestro Montanaro stopped the orchestra, and eventually the piano had to be substituted for a smaller piano. I have never seen such a thing happen in many years of concert-going. Eventually, the show did go on. In addition to that enormous faux pas, the concert which was supposed to start at 5:00 P.M. started about 5:20 after various speeches and advertising from the sponsors. As a regular symphony attendee, I was not expecting this casual of a structure, especially given the caliber of the performers. The Russian National Orchestra was wonderful and played Rachmaninoff's Symphony No.2 with passion and skill. Overall, it was a great evening. I would just hope the organizers/staff of Lincoln Theater get their act together, especially when hosting such incredible performers.
