Le Corsaire is a wonderful ballet, but not a great one. Inspired by Byron's poem, The Corsair, the ballet falters in telling its story in a engrossing manner, indeed, much of the time the story seems irrelevant to the performances of the dancers. It is these performances, and the greatness of the music excellently performed by a 70 piece orchestra, that provides for a satisfying night at the ballet. But absent an engrossing and coherent story, one simply fails to emotionally connect with the characters and this work becomes simply an exhibition of ballet dance; and an excellent one at that.
