How was your experience?
Girl Friday's production of Camino Real was an extremely enjoyable experience. It was well-paced, strongly acted and creates an atmosphere around the audience that truly engages them in the world of Tennessee Williams. Special kudos go to Katharine Horowitz for her superb sound design that brought us totally into each moment, and Benjamin McGovern for his scene design that makes the most of a small space and for his directing which utilizes that space quite well. The one critical comment I would offer deals with sightlines. I was sitting off to the far stage right side of the house and often had trouble hearing actors who were facing away from me for several minutes. I also missed action that was occurring far upstage left, behind the partial set (the operation scene was cleverly handled and I would like to have been able to fully appreciate it). But as a balance, I was also privy to quite a bit of fun acting and staging on my side of the house that was not as obvious to the rest of the audience. Since I am a fellow director who is used to working on a wider than usual stage, I would consider a few tweaks in the staging to accommodate the entire audience. All in all, however, the show was tantalizing, scintillating and full of wonderful humorous moments as well as dramatic gems. Thank you to the entire cast, director, crew and staff of Girl Friday Productions. I will be back!
