How was your experience?
My party of 5 went into this with an open mind. We hadn't seen any formal reviews in The Washington Post which was a little surprising. My daughter found 2 blogs from city planners with positive reviews. Then I came across a number of reviews on Goldstar with a few who didn't like it and another few who loved it and then most who found positive things about it but thought the show needed to be tweaked and at times was confusing. I fall into this last category. I liked it more than I thought although I really like Idina Menzel so I had high expectations for her and her performance. Oddly, I didn't feel the connection with Anthony Rapp as I expected to. We had seen Rent, Wicked and Next to Normal so we enjoyed the range and depth of the music even though we didn't come out humming a tune. You can definitely hear certain riffs that are reminiscent of Rent and Next to Normal in this show. I think we would like the music better if we heard it more. I'm not sure the various gender/racial/orientation scenarios added anything to the storyline, and at times it was a little confusing. I got the Liz/Beth difference but couldn't always tell where the story was because the scenes interchange frequently in Act 1. LaChanze was great as the best friend, and James Snyder was wonderful as Josh. I would find a way to lose about 10-15 minutes of the show from Act 1. The revolving scenery was fine. The mirrored ceiling was not as distracting as one reviewer noted, but I didn't think it was necessary to include for that long either.
