How was your experience?
I saw Sammy In Las Vegas in the Summer of 1969, opening for Elvis Presley at the International Hotel/Casino. For nostalgia's sake, I just had to go see this show. The audience was very small, which was a disappointment (I'd like to see them run some kind of promotion to bring more attention to this show). Pete Barbutti was the opener, and seemed to be just kind of going through the paces a bit, though enjoyable. Sammy was so gracious it was just a joy to watch him. He's 86 years old now, and kind of reminds one of the latter years of Groucho Marx, though not as feeble. He finished his show with a song he wrote, which was poignant and delightful. The highlight for me, though, was meeting with him out in the lobby. I told him about seeing him with Elvis, and he regaled us with anecdotes and observations about his days with Elvis. He seemed to take a real interest in the fans he was chatting with, asking what they did, encouraging to do what you love at all costs. Very warm-hearted fellow. I'm very glad I made the decision to go and see him.........again!
