'The Marriage of Maria Braun' is an ambitious play currently at the Atlas Center on H St NE. The large cast (9 actors) portray more than 20 characters, which can be a bit confusing at times. The lead actor, portraying Mrs. Braun, is the centerpiece of the play, and is on stage for every scene. There are no set changes, nor a 'backstage'; actors change their outfits on the exposed 'wings' and sit in chairs while they wait to return to the stage. An interesting approach that makes for a busy stage. A projector provides minimal 'action', showing slides of 1940s post-war Germany. It's hard to feel that desolation in this play however, even with solid acting.
