"When You Wish" is a neo-musical that is still working on finding its legs. The 10/17/14 performance was a real roller coaster of good & bad. Some musical numbers were so polished while others lacked cohesion. The title song, WYW, is just OK, while "Someone Else's Life" and "Paper & Ink" are quite good. The principle actors are the usual mix of professionals & newbies. Much of the script's dialogue could use some heavy doctoring to give it some life. The characters are still too "flat". Even Walt's mental collapse, which is the turning point of the tale, lacks dramatic punch. Frankly, it needs to have much more humor injected into it to off set the tragedy. The Freud Playhouse is located on the South end of MacGowan Hall, within an easy walk from Parking Structure 3 at the North end of the UCLA campus. You will need cash or a credit card to purchase a parking tag to display on your dash. Add an extra hour to your travel time to reach this venue. Be prepared with a local street map or navigation device, as street closures or detours are common near the campus.
