How was your experience?
Ballet aficionados need to know this not the usual version..either in style or dance. No pointe shoes! The interpretation of the well-know fairy-tale is same & different: the best of the differences is that everything the characters do actually has motivation (instead of just dance!). We know Aurora's background and, most importantly, she and her 'prince' know each other before she falls asleep instead of it being 'love at first kiss' (doomed to failure!) The staging is stunningly beautiful, costumes really interesting (note the fairies legs are hard to see because their tights are black against the black floor...it makes you focus on their upper bodies so they seem to fly!) the choreography completely different from Petipa's but quite wonderful. Bourne has used the music (way too loud) to punctuate events and emotions in ways I've never seen. My husband, who hates story ballets (and went very reluctantly) loved it madly...a stage director, he was moved as never before by the story...and he danced Carabose as a young man...We're anxious to see another Bourne ballet asap!
