How was your experience?
My first visit to Davies, a very pleasant almost intimate feeling large hall was the best thing about this concert. The selection of 61 minutes of third rate pieces, a work from Mozart at 16, followed by the Other Mendelssohn violin concerto written at 13! and then after a long intermission Britten's more mature Simple Symphony written at 19 or 20 made one wonder if this was a first rate orchestra or some pick up group of 22 string players the concert master l had booked for the night. It ended with someone's arrangement of two Piazzola pieces composed later in life but of course P is just a tango composer no matter how good he does that and the arrangements just made them Tangos for 22 Strings. Quite lame even if the audience applauded at every pause all night. Sophisticated San Francisco? Not the only event since stopping here that makes us wonder. All in all a nice concert hall but beware of this Symphony's programs.
