Sunday December 8, 2013 / 1:00pmPeter and the Starcatcher
Mezzanine (Rows C-G)
How was your experience?
We left at intermission I am surprised to say. The story just seemed awfully mundane and boring. The first Act took a little over and hour to basically set up that Peter and 2 other orphans have been sold to some guy on an island who is going to feed them to his snake. They are being transported on a boat with an evil captain along with the duaghter of an English Lord, whose Father is going to the same island on another faster boat that unbeknownst to him is manned by pirates. The Lord and his daughter have mysterious necklaces and can communicate through the airwaves with each other and there is a chest with mystical star stuff that they intend to destroy. An hour of exposition with some very clever staging and some snappy patter but not any reall belly laughs (the star stuff is to be cast into the hottest volcano on the island, Mount Jalepeno ... The leader of the pirates is ... wait for it ... charmingly and stereotypically Gay They actually make a joke out of calling him Nancy). Again, amazingly clever staging and a well drilled snappy delivery from everyone in a true ensemble piece that was just basically dull dull dull. Peter seemed a whiney annoying little orphan and I feared if I stayed for the second act I might root for the snake. Now, we probably missed a lot of magic in act 2 but given the lack of magic in act 1 I didn't want to chance it. When I asked my wife if she wanted to leave at intermission the man in the row in front of us asked if he could come, too.
