How was your experience?
I had not visited Actors Theatre in Coral Gables before and I went in with high expectations for the company and for the play, given how well it was received on Broadway. The Artistic Director of the company (who also directed the show) greeted the audience from stage and went on to speak about the show -- about how great the lead actress was, about the set-up of the show, about the feelings the show would elicit... he even went so far as to tell us that there was an unexpected surprise half way through the first act. A good and well-directed play should make all of those aspects evident as the play unfolds (as the playwright had intended, I'm sure). But this experience was not well-directed or well-performed. The actress bore no resemblance to Judy Garland -- in physical appearance or performance. Taking place during Judy's final months, one would have expected some pain and anguish in the vocal performance that was, instead, replaced by a pretty unadulterated high alto with no flaws or grit that can be found on any video or audio recording of Judy Garland. A total disappointment.
