A Midsummer Night's Dream
Shakespeare's whimsical tale of romance, mischief and magic is updated via a new setting: New York City at the height of the Great Depression. The story follows four young lovers -- all the teenaged offspring of mob bosses -- as they flee to Central Park to escape the watchful eyes of their fathers' henchmen. In the park's shantytown, they encounter Oberon, king of the fairies and a gambler who's fallen on hard times, along with his queen, Titania, an out-of-work actress. When a group of lower-class craftsmen rehearsing a play there also gets caught up in the madness, a comical snarl of spells grows and seems impossible to sort out. But with fairies and sprites all around, it just takes a little more magic and, as Puck puts it, "all is mended."
