In the Mood
During his lifetime, big band musician Glenn Miller was criticized for being too perfect. He put his band through endless rehearsals, reworking compositions for maximum appeal, and many critics thought he was killing the vibe of hot jazz. But the public loved him, and his recordings of songs such as "In the Mood" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo" changed the face of pop music forever. Miller's plane disappeared while traveling to entertain United States troops during World War II, but his legacy, and that of other big band musicians, lives on at the Sacramento Community Center Theater with In the Mood. The 13-piece String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra will play over 40 hits from the era, accompanied by sassy singers and flashy dancers. Much more than just a concert, In the Mood is a fully staged tribute to Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and all the big band greats of the '40s.
