The theatre was founded 22 years ago as strictly a stage for adaptations. Until recently, City Lit performed only literature ranging from PG Woodhouse to Charles Dickens. It has since expanded its repertoire to include contemporary theater and new plays.

City Lit is located inside the Historic Edgewater Presbiterian Church building, located at the corner of Bryn Mawr and Kenmore, one block west of Sheridan Road. And a block and a half east of the Bryn Mawr Red Line L stop. Valet parking is available at Francesca's Restaurant across the street on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and in front of the Edgewater Presbyterian Church on Sundays.
