The Building Stage consists of a central performance area, a front lobby space, and a rear work area. It was built to be a flexible as possible. The lobby is simple with a small box office and two spacious, handicapped-accessible washrooms. The rear work area holds a variety of tools and equipment and often doubles as a dressing room. The performance area has no fixed seats, no interior walls. It is defined by curtains hanging from the 18 foot grid. This lends an informal quality to the proceedings. If you arrive early, you'll hear the actors warming up as you wait to take your seat.
But the space also provides a great place to perform. It is an intimate space with good acoustics (as long as the curtains are in place). The audience is never far from the action. The audience/performer relationship can be adapted to fit the needs of the play. And there is a vertical dimension to the space sorely lacking from most of the city's smaller venues.
