Although most people know Steve Smith's drumming from his seven-year tenure with the rock band Journey, his first love was jazz. He started playing the skins professionally in 1974 and worked with players like bebopper Buddy DeFranco and the free-jazz group The Fringe until 1978 when he was asked to join Journey. He left in 1985 to return to jazz while mixing it up with work as a session player for artists like Mariah Carey and Bryan Adams. Learn more...
