Black 47 is a Celtic rock band composed of Irish expats. Their name is derived from the worst year of the Irish Potato Famine--1847--and their sound owes more to The Pogues than U2. Known for lives shows that are raucous, sweaty, frenetic, and fun, the band can make a large venue feel like a small, Irish pub. The Sligo Rags, the Celtic-oriented trio voted Best Folk Act in Orange County at the 2004 and 2005 Orange County Music Awards, will open the show. The Instrumental Women Project, an all-woman ensemble, honors an American musical tradition and female blues musicians who helped create the genre. Featuring saxophonist Vi Redd and vocalist Barbara Morrison. Vi Redd is a passionate bop-based altoist who has performed with the likes of Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie. Barbara Morrison, whose two-and-a-half octave range is known worldwide, has been featured on more than 20 recordings.
